What is AMD?
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in old age in the Western world, and which is currently incurable, but PROMACULA® can significantly slow down the progression of AMD.
Dry AMD (approx. 80% of cases) begins with deposits of cellular waste (drusen). Although this type of AMD progresses slowly, it can transition into wet macular degeneration at any time.
In wet AMD, which can be a result of an inflammatory reaction caused by drusen (see dry AMD), unstable blood vessels form under the retina which can be prone to bleeding. Those affected suddenly experience blurred vision and it results in significant loss of visual performance.
